To the editor: I have treated close to 300 patients with Megace® (megestrol acetate) during the past 4 years for periods ranging from 6 weeks to 18 months and, in a few patients, longer. Most of the patients received Megace alone, whereas the rest received it in combination with four other compounds.
In no instances did I observe the development of diabetes mellitus as described in the paper by Joseph C. Bottino and Charles K. Tashima (Ann Intern Med 84:341-342, 1976). The majority of patients had SMA 12/601 profiles at 6-week intervals during the first several months on therapy and
