Of all systems in the body probably none involves as many complex and interacting variables as the cardiovascular system. It is Dr. Rushmer's premise that understanding the manner in which such a system operates by synthesis of investigations of the responses of individual components is less satisfactory than recording the responses of the entire system and analyzing them. Whereas "traditional" books of cardiovascular pathophysiology have used the synthetic approach, Organ Physiology looks at the cardiovascular responses of the intact individual (or experimental animal) using chronically implanted instrumentation for measuring flow, pressure, and rate.
