During this year the American College of Physicians is offering its fourth Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program (MKSAP IV). MKSAP IV is a sophisticated extension of its immediate predecessor. It consists of a syllabus that summarizes recent developments in 10 core areas of internal medicine followed by a self-assessment test and then a critique with answers, justification for answers, and references. A series of postgraduate courses that address themselves to the syllabus augment the program. MKSAP IV has been accepted with great enthusiasm by the community of internists, as indeed it should be. It is an outstanding effort in medical education
