Cytomegalovirus is a significant cause of mental retardation when infection is acquired in utero. Systemic infection has not been documented previously in the pregnant mother by isolation of cytomegalovirus from blood. We have recently studied a patient with fever with cytomegalovirus cultured from urine and blood. The virus was also cultured from amniotic fluid, placenta, fetal brain, and liver.
Freshly voided urine, buffy coat of heparinized blood, and ground tissues were cultured on Rhesus monkey kidney, human embryonic kidney, and WI-38 monolayer tubes. Tissue culture tubes were rotated in a roller drum at 35 °C. The monkey kidney and human
