Discussion rationale and technique used for repair of esophageal hiatus hernia in nearly 600 operations at the Henry Ford Hospital. The technique permits "reduction in the size of the hiatus by posterior approximation of the crural fibers and maximal utilization of the phrenoesophageal ligament for maintaining the esophagogastric junction below the diaphragm." To the classification of esophageal hiatus hernias as sliding and paraesophageal or rolling is added a third type—the infracardiac bursa hernia.
