To review a book of encyclopedic dimension, which purports to cover a field, one must ask if it is authoritative, up-to-date, comprehensive, readable, and a book every serious worker in the field should own. Spiro's impressive second edition scores positive answers on all counts. Although, as in the first edition, the emphasis is clearly on clinical aspects of gastroenterology (hence the title), the author has paid greater attention to physiology and pathophysiology in this edition than in the first. Still, it is not an exhaustive treatise on the mechanisms of gastrointestinal function and disease. Some of the opinions and positions
