Twenty-two authors contribute to this first volume in a series of three devoted to the microcirculatory phenomena. The 19 review chapters are organized into six main topics: 1) structure of the microvasculature; 2) endothelial and connective tissue biology; 3) blood tissue exchange; 4) biophysical aspects of microcirculation; 5) growth and differentiation of blood vessels and 6) lymph and lymphatics. The authors evaluate past work, discuss the present state of the art, and indicate directions for future research.
