The editors have collated contributions from 24 authors from five countries to put together a review of hepatocellular carcinoma. It covers pathogenesis, cause, pathology, pathophysiology and clinical features. The chapters on pathology are especially strong and well illustrated. The title is actually somewhat misleading as the book is not restricted exclusively to a review of hepatocellular carcinoma but also contains chapters on cholangiocarcinoma, mesenchymal tumors, benign epithelial tumors, "tumor-like" lesions, and cysts. Less space is given to the effects of vinyl chloride and oral contraceptives than to thorotrast. There are good chapters on alpha fetoprotein and on the humoral effects
