A recent study has delineated the relative ranks of factors that determine whether consumers are satisfied with medical care (Journal of Medical Education 54:793-801, 1977). Physician conduct clearly stood first. A part of "conduct" is the person-to-person relation of physician to patient. This study did not dissect out attitudes toward all the components of "conduct" but one does not have to talk to many people outside of medicine to hear the recurring complaint against today's physician that his care is impersonal, uncommunicative, unfeeling, mechanical.
