The literature dealing with the pathologic basis of renal diseases (or for that matter diseases of any major organ) has grown so large that an author who undertakes to survey the field in a single, moderately sized book is faced with a series of unenviable decisions—what to include and what to exclude. These decisions are usually based on personal preferences or personal experience and on the climate of the prevailing but shifting opinion.
