To the editor: I was very disappointed by the editorial "Advertising and Our Journal" (Ann Intern Med 87:114-115, 1977). Four statements are especially distressing.
First is the declaration that "drug advertisements in peer-review journals are a vital part of continuing pharmacologic education." An organization that produces such excellent educational efforts as the Annual Sessions, the MKSAP packages, the yearly series of Postgraduate Courses, and this journal does not have to tout pure commercial advertising as educational. In fact, drug advertising has traditionally been so dishonest that it has fallen under regulation by the federal government. Drug advertisements are so incomplete
