This status report on nonrespiratory functions of the lung is the fifth volume of the series Lung Biology in Health and Disease, which is sponsored by Division of Lung Diseases of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. The 13 chapters cover three units: the treatment of ambient air in respiratory passages (the air conditioning function); the structure and function of epithelium, cilia, and airway secretions; and the mechanisms of mucociliary clearance.
