To the editor: As a medical student who looks forward to a career that includes research, I was disturbed by the letter of Dr. Chaffee (Ann Intern Med 88:434, 1978).
Dr. Chaffee writes that the motive of Kaunitz and Lindenbaum in their study of "The Bioavailability of Folic Acid Added to Wine" (Ann Intern Med 87:542-545, 1977) escapes him and that the article causes him to understand why there has been public and governmental criticism of medical research. In an unreferenced statement he calls the anemia caused by folic acid deficiency in alcoholics "an unusual type of anemia." In fact,
