To the editor: We read with interest the recent article by Livingston and colleagues (1) on the Southwest Oncology Group's results of their combined modality treatment program for small-cell carcinoma of the lung. How could a study said to be started in December 1976 and reported in an article submitted for publication on 1 July 1977 achieve median survivals of up to 1 year in an 8-month period of time?
