Encyclopedias, like camels, tend to look as if they were put together by a committee. But good encyclopedias, like healthy camels, serve a useful purpose. This "guide" is something less than an encyclopedia, but it is more than a textbook. As a whole, it is uneven, but many chapters stand on their own as literate and authoritative sources.
The editors have attempted to cover the wide and diverse field that is modern psychiatry. Although some parts are dealt with thoroughly (for example, psychoanalytic theory and therapy), others are barely touched (family therapy). Some chapters are quite technical, but others read
