It has been only 15 years since the first cardiovascular units (CCUs) became operational, and only 10 years since they were accepted as a necessary feature of hospital care for acute cardiac illness. Nevertheless, most internists now have only dim memories of care in the pre-CCU era, and younger physicians know of no other way. Thus, this account of the development of an elegant cardiovascular care unit at an excellent community hospital in Missouri seems somewhat dated and simplistic, although it is very enjoyable reading.
