David mechanic did not intend that Medical Sociology be read cover to cover, even by its reviewer. Because the book is essentially an encyclopedia or reference book, I assessed its value by using it in just that fashion, with attention to sections in which I have a special interest or knowledge and to others chosen at random.
Using these bench marks, I found the book an invaluable guide to anyone researching problems in contemporary American medicine. The author, professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin, has put together a massively indexed work that in turn treats every aspect of
