To the editor: I read with interest the recent paper by Cohen and colleagues in the December 1978 issue (1) but was extremely concerned about their final statement that antibiotics may be indicated for the treatment of acute salmonella gastroenteritis in patients older than 50 years. Although their retrospective study does appear to identify this age group as being at high risk for endothelial infection, their criteria for selection identified only adult patients with bacteremia. We are not given the total number of patients with salmonella gastroenteritis for the same period and, specifically, the number of patients who are older
