Four major clinical journals recently have published the document "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (1-4). This document represents an agreement among a number of journal editors that manuscripts submitted to them for publication should be prepared in accord with specific requirements. The agreement further stipulates that manuscript requirements stated in a journal's information-for-authors page not contradict any of the "uniform requirements."
The details of style in "Uniform Requirements ..." apply to manuscripts, and the cooperating journals are not required to use any of the style details as their publication style. Nevertheless, the editors of some of the
