Dr. Papper is a humanist, a teacher, and a physician whose mastery of clinical nephrology, coupled with his ability to communicate via the written word, demonstrates that the day of the good, one-author text is not necessarily over. His first edition (1971) drew most favorable reviews as a work of value to the student, the house officer, and the non-nephrologist practitioner. His second edition is nicely up-dated in both text and references, eminently readable, and reasonably priced. Its design and organization encourage a "cover to cover" approach, and its length should permit the student or house officer to read all
