The second edition of Sleisenger and Fordtran's book maintains its well-earned reputation as the premiere textbook in the field of "hollow-organ" gastroenterology. Its continued lack of a section on liver disease may disappoint some, but this surely reflects a wise decision on the part of the authors not to make the finished product any more cumbersome or expensive. In comparison with the earlier edition (printed in 1970) the revised textbook shows 30 new contributing authors, the vast majority of whom are acknowledged experts in their respective areas, reflecting the editor's evident determination to publish the "state of the art" in
