As the initial entry in a forthcoming series of topics in gastroenterology to be edited by Howard Spiro, this monograph has established standards that may be difficult for future authors in this series to meet. The text covers a wide range of topics and is encyclopedic in breadth and scope. The tone is primarily clinical with a great deal of emphasis on information useful to the care of patients. Controversial areas are equitably presented. Few personal opinions are expressed. It is annotated throughout with an excellent and current bibliography.
