Textbooks seem to be written for the medical student or for the specialist. One is hard pressed to find a balanced textbook that is appropriate for physicians outside the specialty involved. The present book is one of a number of recently published psychiatry texts meant primarily for nonpsychiatric physicians. The chapter authors are all prominent authoritative clinicians writing from great depth of experience.
One other primary characteristic of the book is its humanistic focus. Every chapter is introduced by the editors' comments encouraging the reader to put himself in the place of the physician or patient described in each chapter.
