Late in September a small group of medical journal editors met in Boston with representatives of the news media to consider possible conflicts of interest. During the discussions, several news reporters pointed out that potential authors of scientific papers frequently refuse to grant interviews or otherwise assist them in accurate reporting because they fear that early news reports of their work might cause editors of scientific journals to reject their papers on grounds of prior publication.
