My editorial note in the December 1979 issue (1) alluded to one of the fears faced by the physician being interviewed by a representative of the popular media: the fear that news reports of his or her clinical observations or research might lead to rejection of a formal paper on the same findings by a journal editor on the grounds of "prior publication." There are other fears. The reporter might misquote. The headline might be sensational and embarrassing. There may be no redress for errors.
