Psychotherapeutic medicine encompasses more than either psychosomatic medicine or the applications of medical psychology to the physically ill. The 19 contributors to this book present a comprehensive review of the range of treatment modalities available for the psychotherapeutic care of medical patients. The first few chapters on interviewing and psychotherapeutic treatment planning provide a background for discussions of psychotherapy with somatically ill patients, behavioral methods in medical practice, and psychopharmacologic approaches to these patients. Subsequent chapters examine the indications and contraindications for the use of biofeedback in the treatment of medical illness, hypnosis, family approaches, and group and other therapies.
