This paper reports two cases that exemplify the abuse of identity documents for procurement of medical services. This practice may result in harmful treatment, delay appropriate treatment, engender unnecessary work-up, and in other ways add to cost-ineffective medical care.
A 60-year-old woman being seen at a medical clinic is obese, hypertensive, and diabetic. She is being treated with diet, a diuretic, and an oral hypoglycemic agent. At a recent clinic visit she had a urinary tract infection due to Escherichia coli sensitive to ampicillin. Her clinic record indicated that 6 weeks ago she had been cared for in the emergency
