Early in the morning of 26 March 1980 the physical life of Franz Ingelfinger, gastroenterologist, Editor, and then Editor Emeritus of The New England Journal of Medicine, came to its end. A man "who reached the top in two medical careers" (1), he brought rigorous science to gastroenterology (2), and sent forth from his center at Boston University a new generation of gastroenterologists trained to apply that science for better care, many of them to establish important new centers for academic gastroenterology.
For the wider world of medicine his most fruitful career was in the editorial offices at 10 Shattuck
