To the editor: We wish to report an effect of the antiarrhythmic drug mexiletine that to our knowledge, has not been previously reported (1-4).
A 28-year-old man with a history of atopic bronchial asthma received 80 mg of propranolol daily for suppression of ventricular ectopic beats and episodes of ventricular tachycardia. He developed severe bronchospasm, which disappeared after he stopped taking the drug and reappeared after he started again.
Two months before, while the patient was receiving no therapy at all, respiratory function testing showed a slightly decreased ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 second to forced vital capacity
