Covers bacteriology, immunology, virology, mycology, and parasitology. Most sections have been extensively revised, that on virology includes new chapters on virus multiplication cycles, viral genetics, and the tumor viruses. Each chapter in the section on medical bacteriology discusses properties of the organism; clinical infection in humans, including pathogenicity; laboratory diagnosis; and treatment. Section on virology includes new chapters and poxviruses, papovaviruses, rhabdoviruses, and slow virus infections. Each section is edited by a single author; and outlines are given at the beginning of each chapter.
