To the editor: Undoubtedly "The Cost of Outpatient Physicians' Services at a Veterans Administration Hospital" (1) will fuel the arguments against federally sponsored health care. Although we should applaud this effort to identify outpatient costs in the Veterans Administration (VA), we should regard the cost figures themselves with a great deal of caution. There are serious problems in the methods used by Reilly and Reilly. Their errors probably lead to a sizable overestimate of the cost, especially in the areas of salaries and supplies. These areas together account for 76.5% of their estimate.
