To the editor: I read with interest the editorial note "The World Health Organization List of 'Essential Drugs'"(1) in the August issue. As Lasagna points out, the list is proposed as a "model which can furnish a basis for countries to identify their own priorities and to make their own selection." This is why chlorpheniramine is listed as the sole antihistamine, meperidine (pethidine) and morphine as the only potent analgesics, and promethazine as the sole antiemetic. Lasagna does not indicate that these three drugs are listed with an explanatory note that indicates "listed as an example of this therapeutic category
