Many of the studies forming the foundations of modern neuropathology and neurology have originated in the Laboratory of Neuropathology at the Montefiore Hospital in New York City. Most of these studies were done while the laboratory was under the direction of H. M. Zimmerman, who writes a preface to this atlas prepared by his former students and, most particularly, his successor, Asao Hirano. Directed at the beginning student of neuropathology, this is a somewhat larger successor to previous atlases from other laboratories that have had the same worthy aim.
The material is arranged rather unconventionally. Categories are based on anatomic
