The French original and an English translation of Pinel's proposal and rationale for hospitals specifically devoted to teaching. Behind the face of eighteenth century concepts lies a sound focus on the need in clinical teaching for close, careful, and critical attention to small numbers of cases illustrating important principles. The essay proper is introduced with a short biographical account of Pinel that places him in the streams of French history and European medicine. Pinel's main points are still valid for clinical education.
