This update on aspects of gastrointestinal hemorrhage was compiled from papers presented at a recent multidisciplinary symposium at the University of Michigan. Contributors include gastroenterologists, radiologists, pathologists, and surgeons from both the United States and England. Emphasis given to areas in which new information or new techniques have become available in recent years. Topics include nonsurgical therapy—coagulation of gastric and duodenal lesions, sclerotherapy of varices, infusion of pharmacologic agents, and clotting of bleeding vascular lesions and ulcers; surgical therapy—highly selective vagotomy and distal splenorenal shunt; and newer concepts on bleeding diverticular disease and arteriovenous malfunctions.
