Textbooks of endocrinology are often written for either the uninitiated student or the specialist in the field. This updated and expanded second edition is a good effort by the author to provide a well-organized, complete, well-balanced review of basic and clinical information to serve as a reference text for the sophisticated primary care physician.
Although the handbook is comprehensive, it is heavily weighed in favor of disorders of carbohydrate metabolism (25% of the book); three pages are dedicated to phenformin-associated lactic acidosis, a subject now of superficial
concern, and 25 pages to an elaborate and partly impractical section titled "Laboratory
