To the editor: In the editorial on toxic shock syndrome (I)I was cited as indicating that epidermal toxin originally associated with toxic shock syndrome strains is produced just as often by nontoxic syndrome strains. This statement is contrary to our findings. Among 39 Staphylococcus aureus strains from patients with toxic shock, 72% produced the epidermal toxin. This contrasts with a frequency of 17% among 60 control strains.
In experimental animals toxin preparations cause both exfoliation and edema, two responses frequently seen in patients with toxic shock syndrome. Although these findings do not necessarily implicate the toxin in the pathogenesis of
