The widespread use of immunologic techniques in many areas of medicine and the frequent postulation of immunologic mechanisms in the pathogenesis of endocrine, rheumatologic, hematologic, and neurologic diseases necessitate texts such as this one. It grows out of a didactic course as do several others in the field, and is multi-authored. Despite the best efforts of the editor, the result is an uneven product. When it is realized that books, and large ones at that, have been written on the subjects encompassed by each chapter heading, the ingenuity of the several authors is also severely tested.
