To the editor: The UCLA conference on polycythemia (1) contains a serious misquotation. On p. 84 of the text is the statement: "As a result, the most recent recommendation of the Polycythemia Vera Study Group is that no alkylating agent should be used in this disorder." The reference for this statement is the article by Berk and associates reporting for the National Polycythemia Vera Study Group (2).
Berk and associates said nothing of the kind, at least not in their paper. What they said was the following: "The Polycythemia Vera Study Group has discontinued the use of chlorambucil in the
