To the editor: Recently while reading an article on cytotoxic autoantibodies to beta cells in the serum of patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (1), I found myself spending an inordinate amount of time trying to remember the meaning of the numerous abbreviations that increased with each succeeding paragraph. Being unable to remember many of these abbreviations, I was forced to either refer back to the earlier part of the text for their meaning or else read the article, missing the meaning of many abbreviations and ending up with almost no understanding of what the authors were trying to convey.
