The general physician should have a working knowledge of pulmonary function, incorporate spirometric tests in the evaluation and treatment of patients, and understand the implications of measurements of arterial blood gases. Emphasis is on common pulmonary problems such as obstructive airways disease; pulmonary infections, including tuberculosis; and other disorders that can be managed entirely by the general physician.
