To the editor: In perusing "Respiratory Failure Precipitated by High Carbohydrate Loads" (1) I wondered whether the authors have considered whether similar precipitation of respiratory failure in borderline compensated patients with chronic obstructive lung disease occurs in patients who have diabetes mellitus. Could loss of control of diabetes precipitate respiratory failure? The large doses of steroids usually given to such patients, especially those with asthmatic components, may be a precipitating factor in further respiratory difficulties.
