To the editor: We suggest an alternative to the methods discussed by Van Herle and associates (1) for evaluating the thyroid nodule. After being screened with radionuclide scans, 34 patients with discrete cold nodules had fine needle aspiration of these nodules and a simultaneous ultrasound examination. Appropriate sweeps with the transducer of our static B-mode ultrasound equipment during the aspiration have enabled us to both identify cystic areas and improve biopsy accuracy by confirming the needle's position while in the nodule.
