From 1974 to 1981, the sabbatical interval between the seventh and eighth editions, numerous and significant advances have been made in hematology, especially in the fields of immunology, molecular biology, and genetics. To keep pace with additional information, there have been several changes in the oldest running textbook of clinical hematology. Several chapters have been rearranged and appropriately a section devoted only to neoplastic hematologic disorders has been added. Formerly the leukemias, lymphomas, and plasma cell and myeloproliferative disorders were included in one section. Now a 16-chapter section details these disorders in a needed, updated review.
