In the last few years several books on acid-base and electrolyte balance have been published. In these publications, however, only a few chapters have been directly addressed to acid-base physiology or its disorders. Cohen and Kassirer have put together a 510-page book entirely devoted to acid-base, with the cooperation of distinguished collaborators for a few of the chapters. Cohen, Kassirer, or both are authors or coauthors of all chapters, giving a unity of style and goals not otherwise found in multiauthored publications. In addition, as stated in their introduction, the authors share a common intellectual heritage having been students of
