To the editor: The article by Hainsworth and associates (1) was an outstanding example of continued progress in medical oncology. It appears that some extragonadal germ-cell tumors should be added to the list of malignancies "curable" with chemotherapy. I have several comments and questions about the article.
First, the authors subdivided the tumors into broad histologic categories (that is, seminoma, embryonal carcinoma), yet they have not addressed the histologic heterogeneity that is inherent in germ-cell tumors. In a recent series of 12 patients with mediastinal non-seminomatous tumors, 5 had mixed histologic findings—embryonal carcinoma mixed with choriocarcinoma (2). Did the Hainsworth
