Drs. Bronner and Coburn have set up an ambitious goal: to produce "a comprehensive up-to-date treatise on the pathophysiology of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium and other clinically relevant minerals and elements such as iron, copper, zinc, fluoride and the like." Clearly, calcium receives most of the attention: All of volume II and most of volume III (Pathophysiology of Calcium, Phosphorus and Magnesium, which I will not review here) are devoted to aspects of calcium metabolism. But the other elements are not directly associated with a vitamin (vitamin D) and two hormones (parathyroid hormone and calcitonin) as is calcium.
