Spurred by interest in congenital endocardial fibroelastosis in the early 1950s, Miller and associates embarked on a series of experiments attempting to relate impairment of lymph drainage from the heart to the pathogenesis of subendocardial fibrosis. The possible role of the cardiac lymphatic system in the pathogenesis of this and other cardiac diseases remains only dimly understood, despite the considerable amount of literature reviewed here.
