The urge to write a more concise, more comprehensible, more practical work on one's subspecialty can be compelling. In a "categorical disease center" such an urge may become irresistible. However, the urge—no matter how strong—does not guarantee success, and good intentions in concert are no more likely to produce a text of great value than are individual efforts. The Rogosin Kidney Center's Manual of Clinical Nephrology meets no need that is not better served by more modestly priced works and has more flaws than are acceptable.
