The first volume of this two-volume work blends statistical principles and practical experience to present in a nontechnical fashion the many factors a physician must consider in designing a medical investigation. Typical medical problems for investigation are used to illustrate basic principles. Determination of optimal sample size, widely overlooked elsewhere, is well covered; however, correct use of the tables may take some concentration. Knowledge of the contents of this volume will make any physician a more effective critic of the medical literature.
